Mid-Atlantic member Alexis Tingan, MD recently returned from Cali, Colombia where he served as Team Physician for the USATF U20 World Athletics Championship team.
We asked Dr. Tingan to share some thoughts from his trip:
It was an honor to serve as the team physician for Team USA at the U20 World Athletics Championships in Cali, Colombia August 1 – 6. It was a much-anticipated trip as USATF Junior team trips were cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid. I travelled with a stellar medical team consisting of four athletic trainers, one chiropractor, one massage therapist, and one sports psychologist. Everyone’s personality and skillset meshed perfectly to provide expert medical care to the athletes. As team physician, my role focused on the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of medical and orthopaedic ailments not just for the athletes, but also for the entire team staff.
I would be remiss in not mentioning the incredible setting in which the championships took place. The city was beautiful and the people of Cali “los caleños” were exceptionally welcoming to all the teams from around the world.
Dr. Tingan is an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Orthopaedic Surgery, Sports Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, he serves as Medical Director for several of our Grand Prix races and Penn Relays and is team physician for the University of Pennsylvania’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams.
